Kanturk Castle, built 1580 as a huge tower house for the McCarthy clan. Although it was a house it still needed to have defensive capabilities. Note the gun loops beside the back door. The front door is influenced by the renaissance.

Known as “The Old Court” the castle is reputed to be the finest built by a celtic family in Ireland. It was never besieged or damaged by cannons.
